Sally Army concert is music to the ears of local charity!
Rejoice, as it is better known, is a Christmas celebration in carols, music and drama, presented by The Salvation Army in the fabulous setting of Birmingham Symphony Hall. The event will aid local charity Birmingham Focus on Blindness, which supports many of Birmingham's 30,000 blind and visually impaired adults and children. This sparkling carol concert takes place on Sunday, 9th December, with performances at 2.30 pm and 6.00 pm. The Salvation Army has invited the charity's visually impaired service users to enjoy the evening performance free of charge, with tickets for their carers and supporters at just £4.00 each. Chief Executive of Focus, Rob Legge, commented, "This is a wonderful Christmas gesture by The Salvation Army. "Due to their poor sight, many of our service users rely on their other senses, especially hearing. The opportunity to enjoy this event in the Symphony Hall, with its world-class acoustics, makes the gesture all the more heart warming. It really is music to our ears and we just hope the public get behind this event and turn up in their droves." The concert features brass bands, choirs and vocal soloist, Bobby Irvine, together with the ever-charming nativity play performed by local children and opportunities galore to join in by singing your favourite carols. The Army's man in charge, Major Vic Kennedy, said, "Longer life expectancy means that more Birmingham people than ever experience sight loss. Focus and its service users need and thoroughly deserve all the support the Army and the wider community can lend them." There will be no better way to put yourself in the Christmas mood. Reflecting on the Past - Looking to the Future
Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act Wednesday 28th November at 4:00pm. Officially opening this art project at the Keystone Children Centre where individual pieces of mosaic art work have been permanently installed in the foyer and reception area. Lynn Evans, Programme Manager, South West Children Centre, said; "The artwork will remain a symbol to everyone who visits the centre. It calls for a future where all our children have a fair opportunity to reach their potential in life and a break with any injustice from the past". Councillor Deirdre Alden, opening the event, says; It is particularly appropriate that this artwork will be displayed in the Edgbaston constituency. Edgbaston was the home of a prominent anti-slavery campaigner, Joseph Sturge. It is good that so many people - particularly children - from the area around the Keystone Centre have had a hand in the making of the artwork, making this a community initiative which local people can feel really proud of." Over the last few weeks Keystone Children's Centre and Welsh House Farm Community Project have employed an artist - Angela Connors - to work with as many users of the local Centre to make a "commemorative long lasting" art piece around this theme. This has included children from After School club sessions, parents attending baby club sessions, Drop In sessions, Play and Stay groups, family sessions, and children attending the nursery. All who have been involved have been given information to take home about the context of this Project and a certificate for their contribution. The completed art work includes individual pieces of mosaic surrounding the foyer and reception area and a semi-permanent art installation capturing the notion of "home, safety, and refuge". We want this to stand as a symbol to all who come to our Centre that we want a future where all our children have a fair opportunity to reach their potential in life, and that we want to break with the injustices of our past. All of this has been made possible by generous funding received from the Local Network Fund.

Ghostly goings on to support those that live in the dark
Ever wondered what it would be like to wander around a Castle in the dark, to see if a ghostly apparition visits you? Well now staff at a Birmingham based charity, Birmingham Focus on Blindness, are offering us all the chance to do just that and at the same time support those that live their daily lives in the dark. The Charity Ghost Walk takes place on Saturday 17th November at Dudley Castle. A two course themed supper begins at 7pm in the Queen Mary Suite before the tour around the castle commences. The tour takes in the ruins, castle keep and the notorious cottage, which are all infamous for paranormal sightings. After the walk, the tour moves to the chapel undercroft with its two stone coffins and haunted armour, where a psychic medium will demonstrate their skills by delivering messages from those who have passed over! Lastly, a vigil will be held whereby spirits will hopefully be contacted through séances in total darkness. Charity boss Rob Legge said, "It is vital that the Charity looks at different ways of encouraging support. Events such as the Ghost Walk play an invaluable part in our fundraising calendar, bringing not just new supporters to the Charity but events such as this also raise our profile amongst our local communities as well. "Without continued support, we would be unable to assist the 30,000 residents of Birmingham that currently live with sight impairment. "Let's hope there are lots of people out there looking for a real fright night. Spookily, if people spend a night in the dark, they will help us support those that live in the dark!" To book your place, we firstly ask you to pay a £30 donation fee. Then all we ask is that you make a further individual 'donation' of £30 to secure your place for the most frightening night of your life! Places are limited to 40 people only. The minimum age for participation is 18. Participants must also be able bodied, as unfortunately parts of the castle visited do not have wheelchair access due to uneven surfaces. Pregnant women cannot take part. For further information, please call Sarah Hammond at Focus on 0121 478 5229, or visit www.birminghamfocus.org.uk
